Basilica in honour of a painter
homage to El Greco

This homage to El Greco consists of nineteen pieces, enclosing a churchlike space in a transparent and baroque construction. Eight of them are flat monochromes. The story of Christ is told in drawings cut into the other eleven (curved) panels, three of them forming the roof of this basilica - shaped installation.

The 16th century Spanish painter El Greco, famous for his very special treatment of light, got his commissions

mainly from the Roman Catholic Church. For this reason the Passion of Christ plays a major role in his oeuvre.

Feeling affinity with the crucial role of light in the paintings of El Greco, Irène Prinsen started working at a steel basilica in which the drama and mystery of the life of Jesus forms the central subject. Nineteen pieces, among them eleven "steel paintings", enclose a churchlike space. The rhythmically positioned panels, representing crucial moments in the life of Christ, take one in astonishment to the apse. Here one meets up with Christ at the cross: an image of great depth and dignity.
